leaving town, made it to Los Angeles..

obligatory window seat photo:

left Detroit very, very early this morning-thanks Homack for being awake and ready. It’s a good thing we got to the airport when I did, as the line for security grew the second I jumped in. Flight to Chicago was uneventful, and I made the connector to Los Angeles just fine.
I had closed the window during my flight, only to remember that we were flying over some of America’s most amazing scenery and that I was totally missing the sights-upon opening, I was treated to the somewhat alien and potentially creative landscape of Arizona and the Grand Canyon. As a child we didn’t quite make it that far west during one of our National Lampoon family vacations, so seeing the Grand Canyon at 40,000 feet was good enough and a nice treat as I knew we were nearing LA.

a jam with Cevin Key

holy shit…from the Litany site, dated the 12th of June:
This just in from cEvin Key:::

Did a jam the other night with a few guys.
I was thinking wow, what a lineup

Alejandro (nin) buchla
Baseck (sonic death rabbit) moog
Cevin Key (skinny puppy) tenori-on
Cyrus Rex moog/pedals
Databomb electroplankton/909
Otto Von Shirach 909/pedals
Aeron (Venetian snares) 808/pedals
Jeff Squig analog solutions modular
John Frushante (chili peppers) 303 redfish

Quite the jam…!!!! Yes it was recorded.

two words-John Frusciante and a mod-ed 303??-bananas. This is one reason why I’m psyched to relocate to California-at the very least, Skinny Puppy live in Los Angeles. I could be in on the jam one day.

Native Instruments Kontakt is a powerful sampler and musical tool, yet many people barely scratch the surface of what it can do for their music. Soniccouture aim to change all of that with this unique package - Scriptorium.

What is a KSP Script?

Way more than just a sound library, Scriptorium is a collection of unique KSP scripts - kind of like ‘plug-ins’ for Kontakt. A different concept entirely to traditional effects like compressors or reverbs, these ingenious tools open up new worlds of sonic possibility within Kontakt. KSP allows you to manipulate Kontakt parameters at a microscopic level, creating new behaviours, unique timbral characters or even generative sequences.

Paxwell house!

return to Auxetic

although I am not on the finished flier, I have been added to the line-up for the Auxetic 2-year anniversary. I’m pretty excited for this gig-I think I’m in some of the best company that I have played with in Detroit in a very long time, as well as Thomas Melchoir-LIVE!

wii remote/jeff milligan

from Jeff milligan’s site:

“With a Mac, Serato SL or Final Scratch and a purchased Wii remote and Remote Buddy, you have fully versatile, hands free mixing solution for around 50 euro. Remote Buddy behaviours for Serato SL can be easily programmed for any application. You will also be happy to know that you can also use the Apple remote which is shipped with all Macintosh computers instead of the Wii remote making hands off mixing just the cost of the software.”

Gas-Nah Und Fern

Taken from the Raster-Notron website

Wolfgang Voigt-Gas cd/book coming soon!

raster-noton is happy to present the the famous GAS works of wolfgang voigt.

in the middle of the 1990s, wolfgang voigt, better known under a great many pseudonyms such as MIKE INK, STUDIO1 or GRUNGERMAN, and the driving force behind the rise of cologne minimal techno, had reached a temporary peak in his career. regardless, he never really stopped pursuing and developing his true creative music passion. going back to the 1980s, voigt began working under a self realized concept he named BLEI. taking in the most varied sound models, he began to extract elements from classical, polka, or brass music, and along with electronic pop music and german schlager sounds form a distinguished and unique pop music style that would fit in with the subculture at that time. in the early 1990s, influenced by techno, voigt began to experiment with a timbal marching through strongly alienated, free- floating string loops. these elegiac tracks, their lack of beginning nor end beginninglessness and endlessness, their intoxicating, smooth and partly amorphous structure sounded to him like evaporating gas and thus, GAS music was born. GAS is the vision of a sonic body between schönberg and kraftwerk, between french horn and bass drum. GAS is wagner goes glam rock, and hansel and gretel on acid. GAS is there to take you on a seemingly endless march through the under woods - and into the discoteque - of an imaginary, nebulous forest.

In his music, Wolfgang Voigt does not create a direct reference to the original sounds and or even the forest itself. He rather tries to reduce the “material” to its basic aesthetic structure by using different zoom, loop and alienation techniques in order to release it from its original meaning and context. His intention is to create a kind of aesthetic essence, a cave (detail/loop/repetition) where you can get lost.
and for all of you who think that this is too heavy to ingest, please accept this as wonderful music.

for the first time ever, this book „WOLFGANG VOIGT - GAS“ also presents the visual aspect of the comprehensive GAS project. it is not meant to be a „monolithic“ retrospective of his visual work, but it features a broad spectrum of photographic images taken between 1995 and 1998 showing many different moods and perspectives of wolfgang voigt’s cosmos. what they all have in common, however, is the mystical focus and seemingly, the blurring of boundaries between lightness and darkness, happiness and depression, kitsch and art, pixels and leaves. and the enclosed music cd, voigt has opened his treasure chest and presents some well-selected, rare jewels from the very early days (and nights). 4 of the 5 tracks have never been released or played before.

arriving in San Francisco, day one…

Hi everyone!
Just checking in to say that I made it to SF in one piece…the day started out well as Homack and I set out for Detroit Metro at 9 in the morning. It was exceptionally cold this morning in Ferndale-my doors were frozen shut and it took forever for my car to warm up and melt all the ice..
After checking my bags, I approached the security line with some trepidation as I was traveling with more electronic gear than I ever have….I think if I were looking at my stuff through the x-ray machine I would definitely pull that bag in for a thorough search, but security did not even bat an eye. Sweet!
I purchased a great book my professor recommended, called The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell…almost finished it during the flight.
After landing at SFO, I retrieved my luggage, called all concerned parties and friends and made my way to the Airtrain to the Bart station…
The Bart ride into downtown SF is really nice-you alternate between traveling underground and aboveground along various highways, and every direction you look the city spreads out into mountains…the sun was peaking, and the weather was amazing…I snapped a quick picture when we stopped..
After exiting, I met up with Christina at Union Square and walked a few blocks to her place…she is located in the Soma area of downtown. The view from the top of her building is gorgeous-I can actually see the club where I will be playing at on Saturday night..
Back at Union Square we met up with Kelley and took the Muni train out to her place-her area is called Inner Sunset. I stayed here before when I visited SF the first time, and I really like the area…Inner Sunset is directly across the street from Golden Gate Park, and a mile away from the ocean….it’s out of the hustle and bustle of downtown, with tons of places to eat and drink within a short walk…
I’ve ordered some Chinese food, drank a beer and Kelley, Paul and I are going to watch Project Runway…tomorrow I will take more pictures as Christina and I are going to hit the upper Haight and work on some music during the day…
My view from the Bart ride into downtown SF from SFO.
Discussing stuff with Kelley and Christina
